By 2030, the enlargement and remodelling works of the Ourense intermodal station should be completed. The contract awarded by ADIF-AV to COPASA, in consortium with SanJosé and Syneox Rail, amounts to 111.75 million euros, with a deadline of 73 months to complete the work, i.e. six years and one month, from the act of verification of staking and start.
This project will triple the space for passengers and provide the station with 11 tracks, three of them high-speed, which will be partially covered. This is in response to the increase in traffic associated with the high-speed railway in the Northwest and the modernisation of the line to Lugo. Transport has highlighted that this work represents a “great technical challenge”, since the extension and partial covering of the tracks will be carried out simultaneously, maintaining the railway traffic and the station service during the remodelling.
The station will triple the surface area of its passenger building (1,340 m2), remodelling the lobby, “enhancing natural lighting and reopening the windows on the façade”, and building a new glassed-in boarding hall with views of the trackside, above the old platforms 1 and 2. This hall will be connected to a new covered and accessible overpass (with lifts and fixed and escalators), which will facilitate access to the trackside and platforms, replacing the current urban subway.
In addition to the refurbishment of the passenger building, the works will include the installation of a large canopy that will protect the entire entrance plaza, a recurring demand from users due to the lack of protection against inclement weather.
The project will also promote the integration and permeability of the railway in the city and generate new spaces for citizens by partially covering the tracks. It will also preserve and restore the station building and its historical elements, such as the murals in the vestibule.
The work is complemented by the construction of a new track gauge changer in the direction of Santiago and the installation of acoustic screens.
The transformation of Ourense station is added to the works carried out with the arrival of the high speed to Galicia in 2021 and to the projects that Adif is carrying out in other stations of the Galician network, such as Santiago (also executed by COPASA), A Coruña and Lugo.
This project is part of the agreement signed between Mitma, Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV), the Xunta de Galicia and the City Council of Ourense, which unifies the railway station and the bus terminal in the same area.
