International schools in Marbella: a complete guide for families

CONTENT

Parenthood calls for plenty of momentous decisions, but few are quite as consequential as where to send your child to school. Add an international element to the equation and that decision becomes more complicated still.

Fortunately, families moving to Marbella have a wide range of choices. British education is particularly well represented, but there are also Spanish bilingual, French, German, Swedish and American options, as well as schools offering the International Baccalaureate.

Some have been part of Marbella’s international community for decades, while newer arrivals have introduced different curricula and approaches to learning. The choice means families can consider everything from continuity with a child’s existing education to languages, future university plans and how permanently they intend to settle in Spain.

Where you choose to live also inevitably influences your decision. Marbella stretches over a considerable distance and a school’s location can make a significant difference to everyday family life.

So, what are the main options?

Aloha College

Founded in 1982, Aloha College stands as one of Marbella’s longest-established international schools. Situated in a peaceful area of Nueva Andalucía, neighbouring Aloha Golf Club, it educates children aged three to 18 and has a notably diverse international student community.

The school combines a British educational foundation with an international outlook. Pupils progress through the secondary years to IGCSEs, while Sixth Form students can choose between the International Baccalaureate Diploma and International A Levels.

Aloha also has a strong sporting and extracurricular programme, supported by extensive facilities. Its location makes it particularly convenient for families living in Nueva Andalucía and the Golf Valley, as well as Puerto Banús and the western end of the Golden Mile.

Swans International School

Swans has been part of Marbella family life since 1971 and has grown from a small primary school into one of the city’s best-established international schools. Today, it educates more than 800 pupils of over 50 nationalities across two campuses.

The school follows the English National Curriculum, with pupils progressing to IGCSEs and subsequently the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Its international outlook extends beyond the classroom, with a broad programme of sport, debating, performing arts and other extracurricular activities.

The primary school is in El Capricho, while the purpose-built secondary campus sits in Sierra Blanca beneath La Concha, making Swans particularly convenient for families living around the Golden Mile, Sierra Blanca, Nagüeles and central Marbella.

British International School of Marbella

The British International School of Marbella, commonly known as BISM, provides a British education for children from the early years through to Sixth Form.

Its curriculum is based on the English education system, with students progressing to GCSEs in Years 10 and 11 and A Levels in Sixth Form. The school is an accredited examination centre for both Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel and is recognised by the relevant British and Spanish education authorities.

BISM also offers elements of the Spanish curriculum alongside its British programme, which can be particularly relevant for families considering Spanish university later on.

Located in Nagüeles, between central Marbella and the Golden Mile, the school is well placed for families living in Nagüeles, Sierra Blanca, the Golden Mile and surrounding areas.

The English International College

Founded in 1982, The English International College, or EIC, is another of Marbella’s longest-established British international schools. Located in Ricmar in Marbella East, it welcomes pupils from the age of three through to 18.

The school follows a British curriculum, with students working towards IGCSEs in Years 10 and 11 before progressing to International A Levels in Sixth Form. English is the principal language of instruction, while Spanish is taught throughout the school. French is introduced in Year 5, with students choosing between French and German from Year 7.

Small classes and a strong academic focus are central to EIC’s approach, but school life also extends into sport, performing arts, debating and a wide range of extracurricular activities.

Its location makes EIC particularly convenient for families living in Marbella East, including Elviria, El Rosario, Las Chapas and Los Monteros, while still being within easy reach of central Marbella.

Laude San Pedro International College

Laude San Pedro is a large international school in San Pedro de Alcántara offering both British and Spanish educational pathways.

Students following the British route work towards IGCSEs and A Levels, while the Spanish pathway continues through ESO and Bachillerato. That choice can be particularly useful for families who want to retain access to both international and Spanish higher education.

Its size also allows for a broad programme beyond the classroom, encompassing sport, arts and other activities. Located in central San Pedro, minutes from its beachside promenade, Laude is well positioned for families living in western Marbella, Nueva Andalucía, Guadalmina and parts of Benahavís.

Atalaya Colegio Internacional

Atalaya International School offers bilingual education in English and Spanish from the early years through to 18, within an international community representing more than 50 nationalities. German is also taught as a third language.

The school offers a broad choice of routes as pupils progress. At Baccalaureate level, students can follow the Spanish Bachillerato or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, while the Dual Diploma programme provides the opportunity to gain a US High School Diploma alongside their Spanish Bachillerato or IB qualification.

Located between Marbella and Estepona, close to Benahavís, Atalaya is well placed for families living in Guadalmina, Benahavís, Atalaya, El Paraíso and the New Golden Mile.

École Française Internationale de Marbella

École Française Internationale de Marbella (EFIM) offers a French education within a distinctly international setting. The school follows the French national curriculum alongside immersive teaching in three languages: French, Spanish and English.

The school’s nursery and primary classes, from Petite Section to CM2, are accredited by the French Ministry of Education, and EFIM is a partner of the AEFE, the worldwide network of French schools abroad. Provision now extends into Collège, allowing children to continue within the French education system beyond primary level.

Located in central Marbella, EFIM welcomes children of all nationalities, not only French families. Its combination of the French curriculum and trilingual education makes it an interesting option not only for French-speaking families but also for those specifically looking for a multilingual education.

Deutsche Schule Málaga

The Deutsche Schule Málaga has a history stretching back to 1898, when it was first founded in Málaga city. After a period of closure following the Second World War, it reopened at its current Costa del Sol location in 1966 and is now one of the region’s longest-established international schools.

The school provides bilingual German-Spanish education within a strongly international environment, with English and French also forming part of its language programme. It is officially recognised by both the Spanish education authorities and Germany’s Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK), and students can complete the German Abitur there.

Located in La Mairena, east of Marbella, the school attracts families from across the Costa del Sol and is a particularly important option for those seeking continuity within the German education system.

Svenska Skolan Marbella

Founded in 2003, Svenska Skolan Marbella has grown from just five pupils to a school community of around 200 students aged three to 18. Based in Nueva Andalucía since 2013, it is an approved Swedish school abroad and follows the Swedish curriculum, with an extended timetable that introduces both English and Spanish from an early age.

The school provides Swedish preschool and primary education, with supported distance learning available for older students. More recently, it has expanded its offering with an international secondary programme for Years 7 to 9, following the Cambridge pathway and taught in English.

Small classes are an important part of the school’s approach, while its location in La Alzambra, Nueva Andalucía, makes it particularly convenient for families living in this part of Marbella.

The American College in Spain

Also in Nueva Andalucía, close to Puerto Banús, The American College in Spain offers an American education pathway for older students, encompassing both High School and the first stages of university study.

Students can complete their High School GED in Marbella before progressing to the College’s 2+2 university programme. This allows them to complete the first two years of university in Marbella and earn an Associate of Arts degree from Keiser University, before transferring to Keiser or another university to complete their bachelor’s degree.

For families looking towards the American education system, particularly those considering university in the United States or elsewhere internationally, it offers a route quite different from the British, Spanish and IB options available in Marbella.

Creators International School

One of the newest additions to the area’s education landscape, Creators International School opened in Benahavís for the 2026/27 academic year, with a particularly strong focus on STEM subjects.

Teaching is in English, with Spanish offered as a second language, and its British educational pathway leads towards IGCSEs and A Levels. Mathematics, physics, computer science and emerging technologies play a particularly prominent role, with up to 22 hours of STEM teaching each week in the senior phase. Entrepreneurship is also integrated into the programme.

Classes are deliberately small, with a maximum of 12 students, allowing for a highly individual approach to learning. Its purpose-built campus in the hills of Benahavís makes Creators particularly relevant for families living in Benahavís, La Quinta and the western side of Marbella.

Las Chapas-Ecos

Part of the Attendis education group, Las Chapas-Ecos comprises two private bilingual schools in Marbella East, with a Catholic educational ethos and education in Spanish and English from the early years through to Bachillerato.

Bilingualism is a significant part of the programme, with around half of the timetable taught in English during Infantil and Primary and approximately a third during Secondary. Pupils also begin a third language from Primary, choosing between French, German and Portuguese.

The schools combine the Spanish curriculum with the International Baccalaureate framework and are authorised to offer the IB Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. They also prepare pupils for Cambridge English qualifications, adding a strong international dimension to what remains fundamentally a Spanish bilingual education.

Colegio Alborán

Also in Marbella East, Colegio Alborán is a private school that educates children aged three to 18 within the Spanish education system. Its Spanish-English bilingual programme runs through Infantil, Primary and ESO, with French introduced as a third language and pupils also prepared for Cambridge English qualifications.

More than 30 nationalities are represented within the school community, giving Alborán an international character while retaining a strong connection to the Spanish education system and preparing students for Bachillerato and university.

Its extensive campus is another distinguishing feature. Surrounded by nature, facilities include a semi-Olympic swimming pool, equestrian club, school farm, organic garden, science laboratories and dedicated sports and technology spaces.

Which school and which part of Marbella?

With this much choice, curriculum is a sensible place to start, but it is unlikely to be the only consideration. Languages, school size, teaching style, extracurricular activities and future university plans all matter. So, ultimately, does how your child responds to a school when you visit.

Then there is the school run. Nueva Andalucía puts Aloha College, Svenska Skolan and The American College close at hand, while BISM is particularly convenient from Nagüeles, Sierra Blanca, the Golden Mile and central Marbella. Swans also works well from these areas, and Laude is an obvious option from San Pedro, Guadalmina and western Marbella.

Head east and the choice changes again. EIC, Las Chapas-Ecos, Colegio Alborán and the Deutsche Schule Málaga make Marbella East particularly interesting for families, while Atalaya and Creators open up further options towards Benahavís and the western end of the coast.

This is why it makes sense to consider schools early in a Marbella property search. Choosing where to live is not simply about finding the right villa or apartment; it is about making sure the location works on an ordinary Monday morning too.
